Hot Tub Removal: How To Remove a Hot Tub

While hot tubs can be a fun amenity for our homes, they require maintenance and regular work to keep them running smooth. And, when it’s time for your hot tub to go, whether it be because of its condition or your preference, it can be an overwhelming task. Getting rid of a hot tub is a process that can be time consuming and challenging, but there are times when it must be done. Trying to remove a hot tub without the proper knowledge and tools can be a big and risky task. If you have a hot tub you need removed, but you can’t do it yourself, keep reading on to find out how to remove a hot tub from hot tub removal experts and see how JM Junk Removers can help with your future hot tub removal!

How to Remove a Hot Tub

So, your hot tub has reached the point of no return; the shell is old and stained to the point that white vinegar and baking soda is no longer a working solution, the cracks are leaky and dripping, creating pools and puddles as big as the hot tub itself, and outdoor debris such as leaves, dirt, and twigs have made a home inside the tub. Or… maybe the tub isn’t an issue, you’re just ready for a backyard refresh! You need more space to lay out your dream play area for the kids or want to design and craft the dreamiest back patio your neighbors will be jealous of. Either way, that hot tub is an obstacle and these next few steps will show you how to remove your hot tub.

The Prep

It’s important to note that removing that hot tub isn’t gonna be as easy as unplugging it and having 6 guys lift it into the back of a wide trailer. Most hot tubs are going to require some light demolition in order to safely and efficiently remove the tub. With that in mind, consider these few factors before running to Home Depot to start your DIY project:

  • Is your tub empty or full?
    • It’ll be easier for you to remove the tub if it is empty.
  • Is it insulated?
    • Just like Thanksgiving, extra stuffing means extra weight. Consider a game plan on how you’re going to remove this during your demolition process in order to efficiently remove your hot tub.
  • Does it have electricity running through it?
    • You’re no electrician, so be mindful that if there is wiring… water and wires don’t mix well. Consult with an electrician or call JM Junk Removers if this step worries you too much to do by yourself! We are licensed, experienced, and insured, so we can always guarantee safe, efficient work!

The Tools

Now that you’ve prepped your mind, body, soul, and hot tub for removal, you’ll need the proper tools to safely and efficiently remove the tub. No need to consult with your local construction company to find some tools. Your local Home Depot, Lowes, or Ace Hardware will have some necessary tools for light demolition work. Here are a few tools we suggest you use:

  • Sawzall or Reciprocating Saw (same thing, different names)
  • Drills
  • Screwdrivers
  • Dollies
  • Strong straps ( for holding the pieces to the dolly)
  • Pry bars, wrenches, pliers
  • And much more depending on the makeup of your tub

Don’t forget, safety first! Be sure to pick up some goggles and gloves to protect yourself from cuts, scrapes, and flying debris.

The Steps

Now that you’ve gathered your tools, it’s time to muster up the energy and get to work!

  1. Disconnect the hot tub from the power.
    • Ensure no power is running through the tub. Like we said before, wires and water don’t mix!
  2. Disconnect the water and drain the hot tub.
    • Turn off all the valve tubes that bring water into the tub. Leave the diverter valve to redirect flow in the tub
  3. Drain the water from the tub
    • Using a garden hose, attach the hose to the drainage spigot to remove the excess water
  4. Remove the plumbing connections
    • Use a wrench or pliers for this step
  5. Begin cutting the tub into manageable pieces
    • Using the power saw of your choice, begin cutting the tub into manageable enough pieces that you can lift and tie to the dolly.
  6. Load the pieces up and discard them at a new location
    • Strap your pisces to your dolly and start rolling the deconstructed tub out of the yard! Be sure to look up your nearest dump to see where you can dispose of the tub pieces

That’s it! It’s that simple! With your hundreds of dollars in industrial tools and if you work with the same efficiency that JM Junk does, you should be done with your tub in about 4 hours.

But, let’s be real. Hundreds of dollars spent and several hours of labor done, not to mention potential injury or damage to your property, really isn’t efficient. That’s why it’s best you just call JM Junk Removers to solve your hot tub removal needs!
